I was just writing about a new coffee from Kenya where cherries from many smallholders are collected and processed together as a whole. Most of those smallholders have land no bigger than two hectares.

Same goes for the La Bonita farm in Huila, Colombia. The farm is two hectares in size and is located in the village of Pinares. In this case though we were able to buy it as a microlot, which means we know that the farmer’s name is Rogelio Espinoza, a second generation coffee producer, the coffee was grown at 1400 masl, and the variety of this coffee is Java.

The Java cultivar is pretty interesting. Originally brought to the island of Java straight from Ethiopia by the Dutch in the 19th century.

Being anaerobic natural the variety shines through a little less than it would if it were washed, but you will still get some Ethiopian vibes with this coffee. The extended fermentation makes it a little funky and a little tropical with notes of guava and chocolate. Like eating a dark cherry chocolate bon bon, the ones with booze in them.
