Kenya Gathatha Espresso

Kenya Gathatha Espresso

We are very excited to receive our first new harvest Kenya for this year! Gathatha also known as Gachatha (there are multiple spellings) is a mill located in Nyeri county, on the slopes of the Aberdare Mountain Range in Karundu settlement. It is run by The Gachatha Farmers’ Co-operative Society Ltd., which was formed in 1963 and currently has 1345 members.

Being next to a national park, they take extra care to protect the indigenous trees that support the local bird population.

This coffee is made up of SL28, Ruiru and Batian varieties grown at about 1807masl and kicks off the season with a punchy cola like acidity, blackcurrant and lime.

Ruiru 11 variety is named after the station at Ruiru in Kenya where it was developed in the 70’s and then finally released in ‘86. It’s becoming more popular because of its resistance to Coffee Berry Disease and Leaf Rust while producing a good cup profile due to a backcrossing with our friends SL 28 and 34. They are both so tasty that even Tim Wendelboe wants to grow them on his farm in Colombia.
